We’ve been looking after Auckland trees, hedges and grounds since 1982. Spring is one of our busiest seasons for tree trimming, and it’s when we hear the same questions most often: when is the best time to trim, do I need council approval, and is this a job I can do myself?
When is the best time to trim trees and hedges in Auckland?
It depends on what you’re trimming. Late spring is ideal for hedges and light tidy-up work, while heavier work on trees is better timed around the species. Auckland’s mild winters, high humidity and heavy clay soils also mean trees here grow almost year-round, so it pays to trim on a dry, settled day to reduce the risk of fungal disease.
Hedges
October and November are ideal for a light shaping trim on hedges like griselinia, pittosporum, buxus and photinia. The aim is to tidy the shape and encourage dense new growth, not to take it back hard. Keep the base slightly wider than the top so light reaches the lower foliage. A second light trim in late summer keeps fast growers tidy heading into autumn. If a hedge has got well out of hand, our guide to transforming overgrown Auckland hedges covers how to bring one back without killing it.
Established trees
Light trimming, like lifting branches off a roof or clearing a path, can be done most of the year. Heavy cuts are a different matter. In spring, trees are pushing out new leaves and drawing on stored energy, so a big reduction can stress them and trigger weak regrowth. Major structural work on deciduous trees is often easier in winter, when the tree is dormant and its branch structure is easy to see.
Storm damage
Broken limbs, split branches and hanging deadwood should be dealt with as soon as possible, whatever the season, to protect people and property.
A note on nesting birds
Spring is nesting season for many of our native birds, which are protected under the Wildlife Act. Before trimming a dense hedge or tree, take a minute to check for nests.
Do you need council approval to trim or remove a tree in Auckland?
For most trees on private property in Auckland, you don’t need council approval to trim or remove them.
If in doubt, ask before you cut. Auckland Council’s page on checking whether you can trim or remove a tree explains how to find out.
You’ll need resource consent to trim, remove or work near a tree if it is:
- Scheduled as a notable tree in the Auckland Unitary Plan
- Within a Significant Ecological Area (SEA)
- Protected by a condition of a previous resource consent, or by a covenant or consent notice on your property title
Trees on council land
Street trees and trees in parks and reserves belong to the council. You need the council’s permission to trim, remove or work around them, even if they overhang your property.
Dangerous trees
If a protected tree has fallen, split or poses an immediate risk of injury, it can be dealt with urgently, but you’ll need written advice from a professional arborist and photos showing the urgency. Our arborists can assess the tree and provide that advice, so get in touch to request an urgent tree assessment.
When to call in the experts
When it’s worth bringing in a qualified arborist:
- The tree is tall or the limbs are heavy. Once you’re working off a ladder or cutting limbs thicker than your wrist, the chance of injury or property damage climbs fast.
- Branches are near power lines. Only approved, trained contractors can work on trees close to overhead lines.
- The tree is close to the house, a driveway or a fence. Large limbs need to be cut in sections and lowered in a controlled way.
- The tree might be protected. An arborist can help you check the rules and provide the written advice council asks for.
- You’re seeing signs of trouble. Dead or hanging branches, cracks in the trunk, fungus at the base, or a lean that’s getting worse all call for a professional assessment.
Our tree trimming service covers:
- Crown lifting: removing lower branches for clearance over paths, driveways and buildings
- Crown thinning: letting more light and air through the canopy and reducing wind load
- Crown reduction: reducing a tree’s height or spread while keeping its natural shape
- Deadwooding: removing dead and dying branches before they fall
- Hedge trimming and shaping: keeping hedges dense, even and at the height you want
We also handle safe tree removal and stump grinding when a tree has reached the end of its life.
Commercial grounds maintenance
For property and facilities managers, our crews also trim and maintain trees across schools, healthcare and community facilities, and commercial sites throughout Auckland as part of a scheduled commercial grounds maintenance programme. Every team member is police-checked, and we provide regular reporting and site photos.
